Tale 59- The Disappearing Butterfly

After a day or two of feeling lonely without Sara, the Traveler finally picked herself up again and wandered toward a town at the base of a mountain. There, she watched several street performers putting people inside bubbles or creating human towers. She watched as one of them vaulted off a fountain, landing close to her and taking her by surprise slightly. He tipped his hat, the girl getting her usual strange sensation and approaching him. “Excuse me, sir…would you happen to know any stories?” she asked, the man being a little surprised but giving an eager nod. “Oh, you’re in luck! I learned a most interesting story just yesterday and I’ve been dying to share it with someone!” he laughed, before hopping back up the fountain and sitting atop it, telling the tale of ‘the Disappearing Butterfly’.

‘Once upon a time, there was a famous magician who was known all throughout the lands, who performed the most incredible tricks and was invited by numerous kings and queens to perform in their courts. One of his most famous tricks was the ability to turn into a butterfly, which shocked and amazed all who watched. Unfortunately, there were many who were extremely jealous of his talent, and a group of bandits decided to plot to kill him, cornering him in an alley one night to rob and attack him. Mockingly, they told him he should just turn into a butterfly and get away, but the man fell to their blades, as the beauty he portrayed was merely an illusion.’

The Traveler politely thanked the man, who smiled and tipped his hat once more, leaping away to go and entertain other onlookers. Meanwhile, the Traveler stared down at her reflection in the water. Despite everything that had happened, she was feeling much better. Sarafelle was truly the embodiment of kindness, and she missed her dearly. Despite their shared, painful history, the Traveler had truly grown a care for her companion, and reminded herself of her promise. Standing up, she followed the path out of the town, wondering how high up the mountains she might be able to get, even with the towns and forests populating the landscape. But above all, she was avoiding the castle, so she had to be careful.
